St. John’s, NL (May 12, 2020) – PC Official Opposition Critic for Education and Early Childhood Development and MHA for Bonavista, Craig Pardy, today called upon the Government to finally provide the supports and tools the education system requires to make the best of an unfortunate situation.

“On April 2, Minister Warr announced that students without internet accessibility would be looked after. It has now been over two months and my office continues to hear from parents who have not heard from the District about continued learning. Many students, both for socio-economic reasons and a lack of high speed internet in rural areas, have been left behind in this school year. Not every family can afford or even access high speed internet and iPads!”

Mr. Pardy also expressed concern over the lack of a plan to benchmark student success and teacher-student interactions.

“While Francophone students are receiving daily instruction from their teachers, some students under the NL English School District are reporting little to zero contact from the school. Have benchmarks been established for student success and teacher-student interactions over this pandemic? Again, schools closed over two months ago and we have not seen any sign of a plan from the Minister.”

Mr. Pardy feels it is time for the Minister to meaningfully engage with the NLTA, NL Federation of School Councils, the NL English School District and the Conseil Scolaire Francophone. Pardy noted the Department has the renowned Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI) which could be part of any plan going forward.

“What we need now is leadership from the Department,” ended Pardy.
