Parrott Calling On Government To Work With Private Campground Operators To See If Overnight Campgrounds Could Safely Open Earlier
"We know it can only happen if it can be done safely, so what we are asking is for government to work with private campgrounds operators, listen to their recommendations, and see if a plan could be developed for earlier opening,” said Parrott.

St. John’s, NL (May 12, 2020) – PC Official Opposition critic for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and MHA for Terra Nova, Lloyd Parrott, is calling on government to work with private campground operators to develop a plan that would see overnight campgrounds open earlier. Leading by example, the Liberal government should start by developing a plan for provincial parks.

There are many provincial parks throughout the province that are operated by government as well as private campgrounds who rely on a short camping season to make a living. Right now, overnight camping will not be permitted until Alert Level 2 which is expected in early July. We have heard from many residents and private campground operators that this is too late and operational guidelines can be put in place to allow overnight camping to occur earlier.

“Some other provinces have found ways to open overnight campgrounds earlier than here in this province. I am calling on government to take a leadership role here. Work with their own provincial parks and consult with private campground operators to see if a plan can be developed so that overnight camping can be safely opened earlier while maintaining social distancing requirements” said Parrott.

“Camping is a big part of our culture in this province. We get a very short window to enjoy the outdoors. It is so important for our mental health, probably more so this year than any year. We know it can only happen if it can be done safely, so what we are asking is for government to work with private campgrounds operators, listen to their recommendations, and see if a plan could be developed for earlier opening,” said Parrott.
