St. John’s, NL (May 12, 2020) – PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Windsor Lake, Ches Crosbie, is calling on Federal Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan to break his silence on what, specifically, his Department is going to do to support the NL Offshore Industry.

Crosbie noted the decision by Suncor to shelve the Terra Nova Project as the latest blow to NL’s oil industry.

“Minister Seamus O’Regan needs to come out of hiding to provide an update on support for the NL Oil Industry. Where is the support O’Regan has promised our Industry? It has been over two months since COVID 19 began to decimate our offshore and NL’s Regional Federal Cabinet Minister is silent,” fired Crosbie. “Thus far we have seen 1.7 Billion for Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia while NL got 75 million for emission reduction which does not provide the essential support industry urgently needs,” noted Crosbie, “and as we now see again, companies such as Suncor cannot wait for months while Seamus O’Regan joins the silent six NL Liberal MP’s.”

Crosbie noted the industry was told another NL specific announcement was “imminent,” but that was weeks ago. And now, without that support, the Terra Nova will remain offline until 2022.

“We urgently need specific, targeted measures to stabilize and foster growth in our offshore Industry. Both the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association (NOIA) have made proposals to the Minister which seem to have fallen on deaf ears,” noted Crosbie.

“We have seen the Government of Canada step up for other industries in the country that have been impacted by COVID 19, and we deserve no less.”
