St. John’s, NL (May 22, 2020) – PC MHA for Harbour Main, Helen Conway Ottenheimer, is calling on Government to immediately address traffic concerns related to ongoing culvert replacement on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Last evening, commuters spent upwards of 5 hours trying to safely navigate the detour through Route 60 put in place by the Department of Transportation and Works.

“This is completely unacceptable and yet another example of a project undertaken by government with totally inadequate planning and poor execution. Minister Steve Crocker indicated this morning that his department did not anticipate high traffic volumes. This is the Trans-Canada highway! Where did the Minister believe hundreds of commuters were going to go? The pictures from last night are alarming. Residents and commuters alike are concerned over the bottle neck of traffic, the massive delays and also question how any emergency vehicles will ever be able to get through,” said Conway Ottenheimer.

“Why didn’t the Minister have staff on hand to help direct traffic at key points along the diversion? Why isn’t the work being done overnight? Is the contractor working seven days a week? Why isn’t a temporary lane being put on the TCH instead of the diversion through a residential area? It is hard to believe anywhere else in Canada the Trans-Canada Highway would be closed for weeks like this. Residents deserve better,” said Conway Ottenheimer.
