St. John’s, NL (May 26, 2020) –PC Official Opposition Finance critic and MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, Tony Wakeham, is calling for the House of Assembly to convene to allow a full and open discussion on the fiscal update.

On Friday, May 22, the Premier said that a fiscal update should be ready in the next week.

Wakeham said, “It has been almost two months since the end of the fiscal year and it is time we get an update on our province’s fiscal situation. While we understand and appreciate that officials in the Department of Finance have had to focus on the pandemic response, it is now time that they turn their focus to providing the people of the province with an update on the fiscal situation. The Premier needs to immediately set a date for this to happen”.

Wakeham went on to say that the Liberal Government has had a track record of hiding behind numbers and not providing any details to the public. The fiscal position of our province was unsustainable leading into this pandemic and now has become a crisis situation that requires swift action.

“The discussion on the fiscal update is too important to be limited to an hour media availability by the Minister of Finance. This discussion needs to happen in the House of Assembly so all MHAs can have an opportunity to ask questions and hold Government to account for the information they are presenting,” said Wakeham.
