St. John’s, NL (May 28, 2020) –PC Natural Resources Critic and MHA for Conception Bay East – Bell Island, David Brazil, and MHA for Placentia West – Bellevue, Jeff Dwyer, are raising questions about the sale of the North Atlantic refinery, retail stores, and assets to Irving Oil.

Brazil says, “Irving Oil has been a corporate citizen in our province for many years, but what does the purchase of the refinery and retail stores mean for those operation? We have heard that Irving Oil was interested in purchasing the facility in the past purely for storage capacity as opposed to operating it as a refinery. This has us extremely concerned about the potential for job losses and a further blow to our economy.”

Brazil is hopeful that Irving Oil will continue to refine products here in the province and supply petroleum products to local and international markets.

“I look forward to see what their plans are and to advocate for investment and job creation at the Come By Chance Refinery,” says Brazil.

Dwyer believes that the refinery can continue to be a key economic driver for the region but is asking what this purchase could mean for jobs.

Dwyer says, “Ensuring that the refinery continues to be a long-term employer for the region is of the upmost importance. I believe that Irving Oil should provide an update to the people of this area regarding their plans for the facility and related employment. I will be working closely with our Natural Resources Critic, David Brazil, to monitor the situation on what this means for the people of our province,” says Dwyer.
