St. John’s, NL (June 4, 2020) – PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Windsor Lake, Ches Crosbie, expressed disappointment in the lack of financial substance to an announcement earlier today by federal Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan.

“Offshore petroleum industry participants and provincial legislators alike agree that we desperately need exploration drilling incentives for jobs and prosperity. Today’s announcement by Federal Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Reagan concerning shorter timelines for drilling permits was expected, but useless if there is no exploration to permit,” said Crosbie.

Crosbie says, “The hopes and prayers of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are with Seamus to deliver what our economy needs, but industry is concluding that the anti-offshore forces in the Trudeau Liberal government have won the battle over whether to throw us a life preserver or an anchor.“

PC Opposition Natural Resources Critic and MHA for Conception Bay East – Bell Island, David Brazil, is also deeply concerned about the lack of support from Ottawa.

Brazil said, “Layoffs are happening, including most recently at Hibernia, and drill rigs continue to be put into long term, non-operational storage, called ‘cold stack’. The future of our local industry, and thousands of well-paying jobs, depends on assistance from Ottawa.”
