St. John’s, NL (July 2, 2020) – Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, says it is shocking and alarming that Minister Haggie is dismissing the urgent appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador doctors who say medical services are reopening too slowly for the good of their patients.

Wakeham, a former Health Authority CEO and health administer for over 30 years, says, "Unlike Minister Haggie, I believe the province's doctors who say the health system is in crisis and urgent action is needed now. MHAs are hearing the very same concerns about medical backlogs turning patients' lives upside-down,” said Wakeham.

“It is when you talk to people, like the individual I spoke to this morning who had his prostate cancer surgery cancelled in March, that you understand the real impact that backlogs are having on people who had appointments or surgeries cancelled. An individual does not get scheduled for surgery unless it is absolutely needed and, in the case of cancer surgery, timing is critical,” said Wakeham.

"When a Minister of Health ‎dismisses the concerns of frontline doctors who say the health system is in crisis, there is a serious problem in our province. Burying his head in the sand will not address the crisis that has doctors alarmed and patients worried their lives are in jeopardy because the minister has no plans to get the health system back on track," he said.

"In over thirty years in health care, I have never seen a Minister of Health so blatantly ignore concerns raised by doctors in this province. This level of arrogance is very concerning. The doctors deserve better but most importantly the people of our province deserve better," said Wakeham.

On May 22, 2020, the PC Opposition called on the Minister of Health to immediately release plans to address the backlog in health services. To date, plans have not been made public.
