St. John’s, NL (July 9, 2020) –Jim Lester, PC Opposition MHA for Mount Pearl North and critic for Agriculture, is glad that government has finally come to its senses and reinstated special permits to help our provinces farmers.

Lester says, “This is something that both farmers and the Official Opposition have been advocating for. We are glad that the stubbornness of the Minister responsible has finally waned on this issue as he has been out of touch with the reality of primary producers.”

The issue of dealing with nuisance moose destroying crops reached a boiling point last fall when the Minister responsible for Land Resources accused the Official Opposition critic of condoning poaching when advocating for farmers rights to protect their crops.

“Now that these permits will finally be restored, will the charges levied against farmers that were simply protecting their crops and livelihoods be dropped?,” asks Lester.

Lester says, “It’s doubtful that the Minister will acknowledge his mistake over removing these permits initially, however, an apology to those that were simply protecting their livelihoods would go a long way in repairing relationships with farmers. The Minister should also assess the lost revenue to our food producers and evaluate what steps could be taken to make them whole.”
