St. John’s, NL (July 10, 2020) – Barry Petten, PC Opposition MHA for Conception Bay South and critic for Transportation and Works, is expressing concern over the recent decision of a national airline to reduce service to regional airports in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Petten says, “For many of these regions, air travel is a critical lifeline for medical appointments, workers, and the local economy. A reduction in the amount of routes and in competition for these areas is a terrible loss for Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic has arisen, airlines and airports have taken massive financial hits due to a lack of air traffic.

“As an example, Gander International is losing $14,000 per day. How long can airports sustain these types of losses? Our worry is that if routes continue to disappear that they may never return. This could push some of our regional airports out of operation and in turn deal yet another blow to workers and the economy.” says Petten.

Petten says, “The Minister and our representatives in Ottawa have been silent on this issue which is particularly troubling. What is the plan here? Our airports and the services that they support are simply running out of time.”
