St. John’s, NL (July 14, 2020) – PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Windsor Lake, Ches Crosbie, is questioning the rationale for limiting weddings to a maximum of 50 people.

While bars and restaurants are permitted to be open at 50 per cent capacity which may mean more than 50 people, there is a restriction of 50 people including the officiant permitted at weddings. Although our province is part of the Atlantic Bubble, other provinces, like Nova Scotia, have different rules that permit a maximum of 200 people at indoor weddings. The PC Opposition has received numerous calls and emails from frustrated couples and businesses.

“It is a very stressful time for many couples who are trying to plan their wedding and struggling to understand why there is a limit of 50 people on weddings. It simply does not make sense given that larger groups are permitted at bars and restaurants, the same places where weddings often take place” said Crosbie.

Crosbie went on to say “the people of our province worked very hard to ‘flatten the curve’ by following public health guidelines. Many people felt that we should have fully opened our province before joining the Atlantic Bubble. Now we see differences in how other provinces, like Nova Scotia, are treating weddings by allowing groups of up to 200, four times what is permitted here”.

“This inconsistency is not fair to the many couples that are hoping to get married this year and to the many businesses that provide services in the wedding sector in this province. We understand their frustration and are calling on Government to explain why the rules for weddings are different in our province”.
