Shortchanged by Ottawa Yet Again, Says Crosbie: Only Half Our Fair Share of COVID-19 Funding
Crosbie says, “The Safe Restart economic needs are greater in this province than elsewhere and require greater action here than elsewhere. The Liberal government here has repeatedly obeyed its Ottawa masters and tolerated rip-offs and unfair treatment.”

St. John’s, NL (July 17, 2020) – PC Official Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie says a federal program to help restore the post-covid economy is proof that provincial Liberals have no will to fight Ottawa for fair treatment for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

With approximately 1.4% of the country’s population, a fair and proportionate share of the much needed “Safe Restart” funding would be $266 million as opposed to the $146 million Newfoundland and Labrador will receive - a $120 million underpayment.

Crosbie says, “The Safe Restart economic needs are greater in this province than elsewhere and require greater action here than elsewhere. The Liberal government here has repeatedly obeyed its Ottawa masters and tolerated rip-offs and unfair treatment.”

‘’We should ignore our Liberal MPs in Ottawa and hire the WE charity to lobby for us instead”, says Crosbie, referencing the recent corruption scandal involving the Trudeau Liberals.

“At least WE has influence”, he added, “our federal MPs have none.”

Some examples that show how Liberals talking to Liberals results in our unfair treatment:

• Federal money transfers to support provincial public services in which Quebec gets $13 billion, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick get $2 billion each, and we get nothing.
• They have ignored desperate calls for financial incentives to sustain our oil and gas industry, which has been hit hard by the pandemic and other factors.
• They have failed to deliver support for rate mitigation so Newfoundlanders and Labradorians don't have to bear the burden of a federally supported national green energy initiative on our own.
