St. John's, NL (July 30, 2020) – – PC Opposition Leader and MHA for the District of Windsor Lake, Ches Crosbie, is challenging the incoming Liberal Leader and Premier to correct and extend the rent relief program so that small businesses can get the support they need.

“The Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program is not responding to the needs of small business in this province. The Federal government has not made necessary changes to the program to help tenants who need the relief. Therefore, I believe that the Provincial Government should use their portion of the funding to provide immediate rent assistance,” said Crosbie.

Crosbie continued to call upon the incoming Liberal Leader and Premier to pledge support for small businesses through changes and an extension to the rent relief program.

“Next week, we will have a new Premier. Next week, the flawed commercial rent assistance program ends. The new Premier will have the power to direct the provincial funds allocated for the rent relief program. I call upon both Liberal Leadership Candidates to publicly promise that next week, if they become Premier, they will use the provincial funds in the program to provide direct and immediate rent relief to our small businesses. This will also require extending the program to ensure that businesses can remain open, people can remain employed, and our economy can begin to recover,” said Crosbie.
