For Immediate Release

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, has expressed condolences to the family of Alex Hickman, a former Chief Justice of the Trial Division of the province’s Supreme Court and a former Cabinet Minister in the government of Premier Frank Moores, where he served in several portfolios, including Justice and Attorney General, Health, Intergovernmental Affairs, Finance and Education.

“Alex Hickman made a tremendous contribution to our province, both in government and in the courts. When the federal and provincial governments appointed him to head the commission of inquiry into the tragic sinking of the Ocean Ranger oil rig in 1982, he used the opportunity to make far-reaching recommendations that have immeasurably improved the safety of offshore workers,” said Davis.

“That is just a part of his remarkable legacy. As Justice Minister, he took the lead in revising and restructuring the District Courts, restructured the Provincial Courts, restructured the Supreme Court by creating two divisions – the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division – and introduced one of the first Unified Family Courts in Canada. He also led the inquiry in Nova Scotia into the wrongful conviction of Donald Marshall Jr. He was a role model for all of us; and he will be missed,” said Davis.
