St. John's, NL (August 14, 2020) – Lloyd Parrott, PC Critic for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and MHA for Terra Nova, is expressing concerns that the Liberal Government does not have a plan to ensure our province’s tourism sector will recover.

“This Liberal Government continues to disappoint tourism operators within the province. For several years, airports, especially those outside of St. John’s, have been suffering from the loss of key routes. The recent decision of a national airline to reduce service to regional airports strikes a further blow. Ferry routes have also been reduced making it harder to explore our great province. I am concerned about the long lasting effects of such cancellations on the tourism sector in our province and if access routes will ever be restored. Once they are gone, they will be gone forever unless we take action” said Parrott.

Parrott believes that tourism can bring a bright future to Newfoundland and Labrador and be an economic driver, as long as action is taken now to ensure that operators and tourists alike are engaged for future seasons.

“This tourism season has been tough on many operators. I look forward to the time when people can safely travel and visit our province. We have a world class tourism experience in our province. We need the Liberal Government to show leadership and immediately work with tourism operators to put a recovery plan in place to restore our vibrant tourism sector” said Parrott.

While Premier-designate Furey is busy transitioning to his new role, his government continues to dither on important issues for the people of our province such as a plan to safely reopen schools, support for the oil and gas sector and economic recovery. It’s time to put Newfoundland and Labrador first, added Parrott.
