St. John's, NL (August 28th, 2020) – PC Official Opposition Industry Critic, Lloyd Parrott and Labour Critic, Paul Dinn are expressing concern over the drill rig, Transocean Barents, which will finish operations in the coming weeks.

Parrott and Dinn said while the new Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, may believe the departure of the Transocean Barents will not affect the future of the offshore in this province, there will be devastating effects.

“While I am glad to see that we still have optimism, let me say this - for the last 5 years I have heard the Liberal Party use these words on a daily basis when talking about our offshore “Bright”, “Hope”, and “Optimism”. None of these words pay bills. None of them provide jobs. These words have been thrown around like dice on a craps table,” said Parrott.

Parrott continued “Generations of workers have devoted their lives to this industry and now they are left to sit back and watch it all go down the drain. I cannot tell you how sad this makes me. The effects of this will spiral into more than 800 jobs if you include service companies.”

Paul Dinn went on to say “This is not as simple as 160 workers receiving layoff notices. The Oil and Gas industry adds a lot to our GDP as well as direct jobs but when you look at the indirect employment there are huge impacts. In a province that under every scenario has a declining population, it is so critical to keep jobs in the province and create more meaningful long term employment opportunities. Every job loss is dire.”
