St. John's, NL (December 7, 2020) – Ches Crosbie, PC Opposition Leader and MHA for Windsor Lake, is extending condolences on behalf of the PC Caucus and PC Party to the family and friends of former MHA Ray Baird.

Crosbie said, “I am sad to share with you that Ray Baird, MHA in the former Humber West district from 1979 to 1989, passed away yesterday. Ray was 90 years old and was the senior statesman in our party.”

During his time as a Member of the House of Assembly, Mr. Baird served as Deputy Chair of Committees and often sat in the speaker's chair.

“Mr. Baird was known for being as sharp and quick-witted as they come, and this reputation in no way diminished after his retirement. He was still an active participant in our Party, and most recently attended the hybrid AGM from Corner Brook - with his iPad, of course,” said Crosbie

Mr. Baird was a well-known public figure in Corner Brook because of his public service and his wide community involvement. He has played active roles with the Corner Brook Royals and the Kinsmen. He and his wife Shirley (who passed away three years ago) raised seven children.

Crosbie added, “Ray was a political mentor to many and provided keen advice to whomever was wise enough to seek it. He will be dearly missed by his friends in the Corner Brook District Association, as well as by a wide circle of family and friends.”
