St. John's, NL (December 7, 2020) – PC Leader and MHA for Windsor Lake, Ches Crosbie, is expressing his disappointment following news from Trades NL that 75 more workers have been laid off at the West White Rose project site in Argentia.
“Days ago, the Liberals celebrated what they called a good news announcement for the West White Rose project. However, today we learned that the day after this announcement, 75 more people were laid off. My heart goes out to these workers, their families, and all of those who are unemployed and waiting to go back to work,” said Crosbie.
Crosbie continued to call on Premier Furey to explain how this could happen and highlighted Premier Furey’s inability to help workers return to the job site.
“Last week, Premier Furey said that the funding awarded to Husky would ‘employ Newfoundlanders and Labradorians by sustaining jobs at the West White Rose project’. His words are in stark contrast to the fact that 75 people have been laid off. Premier Furey should immediately explain why his government failed to prevent these layoffs,” said Crosbie.
“This province needs a Premier who will stand up for workers and who will fight for jobs in this province. Not only did the Liberals fail to secure the long term future of West White Rose, but jobs continue to vanish on their watch. If I was Premier, I would be working with Husky and the project partners. I would not rest until the future for West White Rose was secure and people back to work,” concluded Crosbie.
