St. John's, NL (December 8, 2020) – PC Shadow Minister for Industry, Energy, and Technology and MHA for Conception Bay South, Barry Petten, is calling on the Liberal government to ensure that legislation removing executive bonuses at Nalcor is passed before the end of this year.
The previous Minister responsible wrote the chair of Nalcor, Brendan Paddick, to review bonuses in the 2016-2017 fiscal year. However, the issue with bonuses has not been addressed.
“Almost $3 million was paid out through bonuses in 2019. This is ridiculous. The members of our Caucus are calling upon the Liberal government to bring forward legislation this week in order to put an end to these bonuses.”
“Government has had 5 years to address this issue and the public has waited long enough,” said Petten.
On December 5th CBC reported that Minister Parsons “…hopes to bring forward legislation to end bonuses at Nalcor, with notice being given when the house briefly reopens next week.” (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/large-nalcor-bonuse...)
“It is not enough to give notice of legislation,” said Petten. “As MHAs we have a responsibility to ensure that public money is spent responsibly. Therefore we are calling on the Liberal government to ensure the legislation is fully debated and passed when the House opens.”
“We are prepared to stay in the House of Assembly as long as it takes if that means that public funds will be spent more responsibly,” concluded Petten in his role as Deputy House Leader.
