St. John’s, N.L. (December 23, 2024) – Loyola O’Driscoll, Progressive Conservative MHA for Ferryland, is urging the Furey Liberal government to prioritize the safety of those travelling on Newfoundland and Labrador’s highways this winter.

The Liberal government eliminated 24-hour snow clearing in 2016 as a cost-saving measure, putting nighttime travelers—including first responders and essential workers—at greater risk during winter storms.

“During the winter months, people travel on our highways at all hours of the night, including healthcare workers and those commuting to shift work in Argentia and Long Harbour,” said O’Driscoll. “The Liberal government acts as if storms only occur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. I’m concerned snow clearing equipment will sit idle when the workday ends. This government needs to ensure equipment remains on the road to keep transportation links open for essential workers, who cannot wait for clear weather to do their jobs.”

Despite assurances from Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Hutton that preparations are in place, O’Driscoll pointed to a troubling comment from former Minister John Abbott last year: “We don’t commit to 24/7 because we don’t think that is needed.” He also raised concerns about reports of equipment breakdowns and staffing shortages at highway depots.

“How can the public trust the Liberal government’s claims of readiness when we are hearing otherwise?” added O’Driscoll. “The safety of our roads is non-negotiable. Resources must be in place to handle winter weather at any time of day.”

A Progressive Conservative government would make highway safety a priority by reinstating 24-hour snow clearing, ensuring roads are safe and accessible for travelers, regardless of the time of day.
