St. John’s, NL (May 21, 2025) – Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and MHA for Stephenville – Port au Port, and Helen Conway Ottenheimer, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Persons with Disabilities and MHA for Harbour Main, are calling for immediate action following a rare unanimous vote in the House of Assembly supporting the creation of an Advocate for Persons with Disabilities.

The Private Member’s Resolution (PMR), brought forward by the Progressive Conservative Caucus, calls for the establishment of an independent Advocate for Persons with Disabilities. With all members of the House supporting the resolution, Wakeham and Conway Ottenheimer are urging the Liberal government to act without delay by introducing legislation to formally implement the role.

“This is about ensuring the voices of persons with disabilities are heard, protected, and empowered,” said Wakeham. “The unanimous support for this resolution reflects a shared understanding that we must do more to uphold the rights, dignity, and well-being of people living with disabilities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Now it’s time for the Liberal government to act.”

Persons with disabilities have long faced systemic barriers and a lack of representation in decision-making. Establishing a dedicated advocate is a concrete and meaningful step toward improving accountability and advancing equity.

“This PMR is the result of persistent and dedicated advocacy,” said Conway Ottenheimer. “We’ve listened to community organizations, raised this issue time and again in the House of Assembly, and worked to ensure this office becomes a reality. With the unanimous support of the House, the path is clear. There is no excuse for further delay. The Liberal government must act now and bring forward the legislation.”

Wakeham reaffirmed that a Progressive Conservative government under his leadership would introduce legislation to create an Advocate for Persons with Disabilities in the first sitting of the House of Assembly under his mandate.
