(May 14, 2025, St. John’s, NL) Tony Wakeham, Progressive Conservative Leader and MHA for Stephenville – Port au Port, today in the House of Assembly called on the Liberal government to implement three measures that would help Newfoundlanders and Labradorians deal with the skyrocketing costs of living.

“For too long the Liberal government has ignored the people who are suffering in our province and struggling every day to afford the necessities of life,” said Wakeham.

“We know that food insecurity has increased; both seniors and children are living in food insecure households. In fact, new data shows that over 30 per cent of households in this province are food insecure.  It’s time for the Liberals to step up and do more on affordability.  And that is why today I raised three critical things that government can and should do to help our most vulnerable residents.”

Wakeham called on the Liberals to:

  • Increase the number of families who can receive the NL Child Benefit.
  • Increase the Seniors’ Benefit by 20 per cent.
  • Ensure that no one in this province has to pay to see a nurse practitioner.

“The Liberals aren’t adequately addressing the financial burdens people are facing, and these actions would go a long way in making their life more affordable,” added Wakeham.  “The struggle that our children, our families and our seniors are facing is very real – they need and deserve more help.  A government led by me will always work hard to make life affordable for all of us.”
