(September 19, 2024 St. John's, NL) – Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and MHA for Stephenville - Port au Port, is reaffirming his unwavering support for the oil and gas industry in Newfoundland and Labrador following his recent tour of the West White Rose project site alongside members of the PC Caucus.

“Yesterday’s visit to the West White Rose site highlights the importance of our oil and gas resources,” said Wakeham.

“We stand by oil and gas development because we believe that our resources should be harnessed for the benefit of our people. This means creating jobs, generating local benefits in our communities, and supporting local businesses in the offshore supply and service industry.”

“The work undertaken in Argentia is a testament to the world-class workforce in Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have built this project and will be in service in the province’s offshore, producing oil and gas, for many years to come,” continued Wakeham.

Wakeham emphasized that the progress being made at West White Rose, with construction nearly complete, is a promising sign for the future of the offshore sector.

“The fact that this project is moving forward demonstrates the potential of our oil and gas industry. It is crucial for our economy and for the livelihoods of many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”

Additionally, Wakeham acknowledged the industry’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. “We fully support the oil and gas industry in their efforts to transition toward sustainable practices. The commitment to net zero is vital in ensuring that we can responsibly develop our resources while protecting our environment for future generations.”
