St. John's, N.L. (October 11, 2024)

Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Stephenville - Port au Port, is urging Liberal Premier Furey to press for the full cancellation of the Carbon Tax.

"Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are already suffering with high costs of living,” said Wakeham. “The Carbon Tax exacerbates this hardship, pushing prices higher and making it increasingly difficult for families to make ends meet. Liberal Premier Furey has suggested that a “pause is needed” but it is clear that a mere “pause” on the Carbon Tax is just not enough. A full cancellation of the Carbon Tax is needed as the cost of the tax is planned to more than double by 2030. Anything short of full cancelation of the Carbon Tax is inadequate."

This call comes following the recent report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer, which revealed that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will face the highest cost in Atlantic Canada—an average of $652 per year per household in 2030-2031.

“It’s time for Premier Furey to stand up for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. The province needs leadership that prioritizes the well-being of our communities. The PBO report is proof that the Carbon Tax is hurting our economy and our families, and we cannot afford to wait any longer for its cancellation” continued Wakeham.

“If I were Premier, I would be advocating to Ottawa for the full cancellation of the Carbon Tax.”
