St. John’s, N.L. – David Thomlyn, Progressive Conservative candidate for Waterford Valley, is calling for additional signage and lighting on the CN Viaduct, a section of Pitts Memorial Drive that has been under construction for several years, following a serious head-on collision.
Thomlyn noted that, as he speaks with residents while going door to door, he consistently hears concerns about poor lighting, inadequate signage, and the sudden removal of barriers, all of which are creating dangerous conditions.
“The most recent accident could have been fatal,” said Thomlyn. “Barriers that once separated traffic were removed several weeks ago, leading to multiple close calls.”
He pointed out that no explanation has been given for the removal of the barriers. Nonetheless, he stressed the urgency of improving safety in the high-traffic area by installing additional signage and lighting. Thomlyn also expressed frustration over the prolonged construction timeline, which has dragged on for years with no clear end in sight.
“This is a major arterial road used by thousands of vehicles daily,” added Thomlyn. “It is simply unacceptable for work on this project to stall for months at a time. Where else would construction be allowed to continue indefinitely with no regard for the inconvenience or safety of the traveling public?”
“Whether due to poor planning or mismanagement, the Furey Liberals have shown their inability to protect the residents of Waterford Valley who rely on this road. It’s just not good enough.”
