(September 11, 2024, St. John’s, N.L.)  Loyola O’Driscoll, PC Shadow Minister of Digital Government and Service NL and MHA for Ferryland spoke out again today about delays that continue to plague the implementation of speed cameras.

O’Driscoll was responding to the Liberal Government press release on September 9, 2024 that issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the next step in implementation.

“Legislation was passed way back in November 2019 to increase road safety and improve safety in construction zones and school bus zones.  Yet, 5 years later, there has not been a single ticket issued.”

O’Driscoll, who has asked about this issue in the House of Assembly, noted the former Minister said publicly back in May that “tickets would be issued by the end of the Summer.”

“How much more consultation, discussions and due diligence is the Government going to do before they finally take action?  Every day we see videos of people passing school busses, extreme speeds and dangerous driving on our highways and municipals roads.  Yet, Government has had the power to take action for 5 years.  It is a total and complete failure of Leadership.”

O’Driscoll noted the three month pilot in 2023 found that 94,000 vehicles were travelling 11 km/hr or more over the speed limit in Paradise and Mount Pearl at two different locations.  However, during the pilot, simple notices were issue by the municipality without financial penalty or demerit points.

“How many more years is the Furey Liberals going to wait before they finally take action?”
