St. John’s, NL (June 13, 2025) – Jeff Dwyer, Progressive Conservative MHA for Placentia West–Bellevue, is calling on the Liberal government to immediately clean up the oil spill in Swift Current—more than four months after a transport truck crash released approximately 700 litres of diesel fuel into the community.

“It’s been over four months since the accident, and wreckage from the crash is still on the side of the road,” said Dwyer. “There’s still a strong smell of fuel and visible signs of contamination. The government’s excuses have changed from delays with contractors, to waiting on an insurance company, to now claiming it’s before the courts. Meanwhile, residents are living a nightmare.”

Dwyer also pointed to the Liberals’ years of inaction on the environmental disaster at the former fish sauce plant in St. Mary’s Bay as an example of the government’s failure to act on urgent environmental concerns.

“Swift Current is a beautiful part of our province, and residents are fed up. They shouldn't have to wait 10 years for action,” said Dwyer. “I’m calling on the government to clean up the site immediately and send the bill to whoever is responsible—full stop.”
