Evans Raises Alarm Over Soaring North Coast Food Costs as Winter Approaches
St. John’s, NL (September 5, 2024) – Progressive Conservative MHA Lela Evans (Torngat Mountains) worries about the ongoing harm soaring food costs will have on the people in her district as winter approaches.
"Food insecurity in our province is bad—now multiply that by 10. That's what we're facing in the Torngat Mountains," said Evans. "Access to food is essential for health and survival."
Recent studies, including those from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and NL Nutritious Food Basket, confirm that northern Labrador communities are grappling with critical food insecurity and soaring costs.
"After nine years of Liberal governance, services in northern Labrador have eroded, leaving families with few options and unaffordable prices," Evans stated. "The Liberal approach is failing Labradorians, particularly in my district, where people are more vulnerable than ever. Immediate action is needed to lower the cost of living. People here are increasingly worried about affording even the basics—putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads. The soaring costs are pushing many to the brink, and the Liberals inaction only deepens their fears for the future."
Evans also highlighted the rapid price increases, making food even less accessible as winter nears. "Families are being forced to choose between heating their homes and feeding their families," she warned.
Removing the freight boat that once provided access to reasonably priced, quality food has only worsened the crisis. "The Liberals removed this lifeline after other regions were connected to the Trans-Labrador Highway, leaving us stranded," Evans said. "I can't stay silent while my people suffer. It's time to hold this government accountable and demand action."
"The people of Torngat Mountains elected me to speak out and educate the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador with the truth. The Furey Liberals have failed to address the growing food insecurity in marginalized communities. My only hope now is to change government. I strongly believe that under Tony Wakeham's leadership, a PC government will prioritize affordability and take real action to enhance the health and well-being of our people—not just show up for photo-ops."
