(October 25, 2024 St. John's, N.L.) – Loyola O'Driscoll, PC Shadow Minister for Digital Government and Service NL and MHA for Ferryland, is pointing to the latest media reports of excessive speeding on our highways as proof of a lack of enforcement, including speed cameras, five years after the government passed legislation.
O'Driscoll pointed to recent media reports of vehicles doing 151, 180, and even 201 km per hour that have shocked the travelling public. O'Driscoll also noted that routine traffic enforcement results in hundreds of tickets in weekend blitzes, which underscores the lack of enforcement on a regular basis due to staff shortages within the RNC and RCMP.
"Over the past few years, we have seen the loss of life due to excessive speeding," said O'Driscoll. "It is time for enforcement. Other provinces have had speed cameras for decades while the Furey Liberals have made excuses for years, despite having the legal authority to implement speed cameras since 2019."
"It has been over 5 years, and not a single ticket has been issued in this province," added O'Driscoll. "How many more months and years will we wait before this government finally acts?"
The PC Caucus has asked questions publicly and in the House of Assembly for years, but the Furey Liberals have only offered excuses and delays.
"Much like off-road vehicle safety training, the Liberals delayed for years before finally taking action. How long will we wait before these reckless drivers on our highways face consequences?"
