St. John’s, N.L. (January 15, 2025) – Barry Petten, Progressive Conservative Shadow Minister for Health and Community Services and MHA for Conception Bay South, has expressed serious concern over the Auditor General’s latest update, which highlights the Furey Liberals’ continued mismanagement of home support services by disregarding the Auditor General’s recommendations.

“The Auditor General’s report clearly highlights the failure of the Furey Liberal government to address the critical needs of seniors who rely on home support to maintain their independence and quality of life,” said Petten. “Liberal inaction means that seniors are not getting the home support they need.”

The Auditor General has identified significant deficiencies in the Liberal’s implementation of critical recommendations related to home support services. As noted by the Auditor General in the report, “serious gaps remain with respect to the timely review of home support service assessments and the monitoring of home support hours.” These gaps are having a direct negative impact on seniors across the province.

“This means seniors are not getting the care they need or the additional care they may require as their circumstances change,” added Petten. “The delays are having a tangible, harmful impact on vulnerable seniors across the province. When assessments are not completed in a timely manner, seniors may be left without the care they require.”

Petten suggested that the Furey Liberals ought to be taking a seniors-focused approach to ensure those who need home support receive the assistance they need.

“Home support is necessary to allow seniors to live high-quality lives in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes. It is deeply troubling that the Furey Liberal government is failing to uphold this essential program and prioritize the well-being of our seniors.”
