Labrador Flag Celebrates Half a Century of Independence and Strength

For Immediate Release

(July 26, 2024, St. John’s NL) : Lela Evans, MHA for Torngat Mountains, expressed pride today as the 50thanniversary of the Labrador flag is celebrated.

In 1973, the idea for a Labrador flag was conceived as part of a special project to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador's Confederation with Canada. MHA Evans explained ‘It may seem hard to celebrate an anniversary of our flag when harsh barriers still exist in Northern Labrador compared to other regions of Labrador and our province. However, it is more important now for us not to be divided as Labradorians.”

“The colours of our land, waters, and sky have always been with us long before someone put them in to a design and created our Labrador flag,” said Evans. The Labrador flag symbolizes a land of resilience and spirited independence, embodying a vast diversity of cultures and unique geographical features. Its landscapes of snow-covered terrain, lush green vegetation and serene waters reflect the beauty and tranquility of our remote land.”

With a strong heritage rooted in the land and its people, Labrador stands as a proud beacon of independence and natural wonder.

“I say to all Labradorians, our flag unites us.  It is a symbol of our fighting yet compassionate and loving spirit. We can be proud as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Labrador Flag,” said MHA Evans.
