St. John’s, N.L. (March 24, 2025) – Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and MHA for Stephenville–Port au Port, is voicing strong concerns after the latest decision by the Carney Liberals to slash crab quotas in Area 3K by 25%. A reduction that will have a devastating impact on rural communities that rely on the fishery for their livelihoods.

“The Carney Liberals in Ottawa continue to make decisions with no consultation or concern for the fish harvesters who are closest to the resource,” said Wakeham. “What’s worse, is that the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberals have once again rolled over and remained silent — a familiar pattern for this government.”

Wakeham highlighted the ongoing failures of both levels of Liberal governments, pointing to previous decisions on mackerel and redfish that have also harmed the province’s fishing industry.

“Yet again, the Liberals have been silent on another critical fishery issue,” added Wakeham. “Instead of attending a national Liberal rally last night, the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberals should have been standing up for our harvesters and those who rely on this resource as a way of life.”

Wakeham reiterated his long-standing call for joint management of the fishery, emphasizing that shared decision-making is essential to protecting the province’s resources and the communities that depend on them.

“Only with a seat at the table can we begin to gain control of our fishery. A new PC government under my leadership will continue to push for shared decision making in our fishery to ensure our fishery is managed in the best interests of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”
