St. John’s, NL (June 13, 2025) – Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and MHA for Stephenville – Port au Port, is calling on the federal Liberal government to keep its promise to reduce Marine Atlantic rates in time for this year’s tourism season.

“During the recent federal election campaign, Prime Minister Carney promised to cut passenger rates by at least half,” said Wakeham.

“Summer is on the horizon and our tourism season is here, yet ferry costs have not been cut.” Wakeham warned that a delay in reducing Marine Atlantic rates could have a negative impact on the tourism industry and provincial economy.

“Tourists are making their vacation plans. The high cost of ferry travel to and from Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be a major deterrent for many,” said Wakeham.

Wakeham is urging the Prime Minister to honour his campaign commitment to lower costs for travelers by reducing Marine Atlantic fees immediately.
