St. John’s, NL (June 26, 2025) – Lin Paddock, MHA for Baie Verte – Green Bay, is today calling on the Liberal government to improve safety at the dangerous intersection of Route 390 and the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH), after repeated calls for intervention have gone unanswered by the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
The intersection is considered inherently hazardous due to its location on a bend in the TCH, combined with a change in grade that drastically limits visibility for motorists. In the highway stretch surrounding the intersection, there are seven different access points that feed directly into high-speed 100 km/h traffic. In 2023, RCMP responded to 11 collisions in the area. In 2022, there were 13.
“Given the high number of traffic collisions in this area and the nature of the roadway, I have recommended that the speed limit be reduced to 80 km/h for a trial period over this summer,” said Paddock.
Despite writing to the Minister three times — on behalf of local Councils, fire departments, and the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce — Paddock said he has received no response to date.
“The silence from the Liberal Minister is absolutely unacceptable,” said Paddock. “We’re not talking about a minor issue — we’re talking about a stretch of highway where traffic collisions continue to occur. I am making this issue public in hopes that the Minister will feel compelled to finally address safety at this highway intersection.
“For far too long, the Liberals have ignored issues in rural Newfoundland and Labrador – including road safety. It’s time for a Progressive Conservative government that will create safer communities for all of us,” concluded Paddock.
