St. John’s, N.L. (April 3, 2025) – Helen Conway Ottenheimer, Shadow Minister for Women and Gender Equality and MHA for Harbour Main, today recognized the 100th anniversary of women achieving the right to vote and to hold political office in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The historic achievement was the result of the tireless efforts of the strong women whose courage and determination paved the way for future generations. It is also an occasion to honour past individuals who continually advocated for greater diverse participation in politics, including Kathy Dunderdale, who made history as the first female Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, serving from December 3, 2010, to January 24, 2014.

“As we recognize this important anniversary, it is crucial to reflect on the progress made and the work still ahead. Despite a century of progress, only 40 women have served in the House of Assembly, highlighting the urgent need for continued efforts to attract women and gender-diverse individuals into political leadership roles” said Conway Ottenheimer.

Conway Ottenheimer further emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by women and gender-diverse individuals in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Even as we celebrate this historic milestone, we must confront the reality that barriers still exist. We see this struggle echoed in the Liberal government’s failure to implement regulations for pay equity legislation, leaving many waiting for justice. It is disheartening to witness our government failing to prioritize equal opportunities and fair pay for all.”

“It is imperative that we create an environment where every voice is heard, valued, and represented. Today serves as a call to action to work collaboratively with women and gender diverse individuals and ensure meaningful change. We must be strong in our pursuit of equality, ensuring that the legacies of those who fought for our democratic rights are honoured through our actions today and in the future,” concluded Conway Ottenheimer.
