St. John’s, NL (January 24, 2025) – Paul Dinn, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Education and MHA for Topsail-Paradise, welcomes today’s school infrastructure announcement but expressed caution over delays and timing.
Dinn was reacting to today’s announcement by the Furey Liberals of a host of school infrastructure announcements, including land purchase for a new high school in Paradise and a proposed K-7 school in Kenmount Terrace.
“Almost ten years after the Liberals cancelled the Paradise high school, I am glad it is finally moving ahead again. Only for the determination of parents and advocates was this Government finally stirred to action. Rest assured the Parents Committee, and I will be continuing to watch progress carefully and will hold the Government’s feet to the fire.”
Dinn noted he has already heard from Parents in Kenmount Terrace disappointed to see their proposed school slipping behind other projects that were announced at the same time.
“Unfortunately, another construction season came and went and there has still been nothing done on site development or construction for the proposed school in Kenmount Terrace. I joined a Parents meeting last summer where strong concerns were raised over construction timelines, overcrowding and poor educational conditions at the current zoned schools of Larkhall Academy and Leary’s Brook Junior High. Sadly, while a new school is years away, nothing has been done in the meantime.
I can only hope that this school infrastructure announcement is not just another empty promise,” noted Dinn.
