Tony Wakeham Announces Plan For Lower Taxes and More Opportunities for Workers in the Trades
Marystown – PC Leader Tony Wakeham today visited the dormant Cow Head Fabrication Facility to announce his plan to bring good paying jobs in the trades back to Newfoundland and Labradors.
“The workers here at Cow Head or at the Marystown Shipyard did more than build ships. They also built their homes, their families, and their communities right here in Marystown. Their hard work built an industry, they built the Burin Peninsula and built the province,” Wakeham said. “My message to every worker, whether you are working away or are looking for work right here at home is that I want you to find opportunities right here in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Wakeham announced that a PC Government will implement a new $2000 tax credit for rotational workers who have to pay out of pocket to work in other provinces.
“This is about giving these workers a break while doing the hard work of building up more long-term jobs here at home,” said Wakeham. “Because my message to every rotational worker is that you should not have to leave our province to put your skills and experience to work.”
Wakeham also announced that his government will prioritize the creation of Newfoundland and Labrador trades jobs in all negotiations with the private sector or other levels of government including:
- A new strategy to build ferries in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Ensuring that Newfoundland and Labrador receives its fair share of any new federal government defence spending as well as topsides work on the Bay du Nord project.
- Introducing a requirement that any public infrastructure projects of over $500,000 in value including schools, hospitals, long-term care facilities, prisons and correctional facilities, will be required to employ a minimum of 10% apprentices.
- Changing apprenticeship policy to ensure that, upon completion of their primary training, all apprentices will automatically receive their log books.
“My message to every Newfoundland and Labrador worker is that, no matter where you live, we are going to fight for you, support you and give you a better deal,” said Wakeham.
“Let’s turn the page on Liberal decline and invest in more and better jobs for all of us.”
