Helen Conway Ottenheimer, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Justice and Public Safety and MHA for Harbour Main, is calling on the provincial government to urgently increase policing resources across our province.

"People in our communities are scared," said Conway Ottenheimer. "They are not only worried about the increase in crime but also about the lack of police presence and follow-up on their complaints. Our police services are stretched thin, responding to calls but unable to provide the thorough investigations and support that residents need. The government must recognize that they are setting our policing agencies up for failure by not providing the necessary resources," explained Conway Ottenheimer.

The RCMP has reported that calls for service have increased over the past year, and despite repeated requests for additional positions, the government has failed to approve these essential enhancements.

“The time for excuses is over, our police forces do not have the ability to focus on crime prevention because they are so bogged down triaging calls. Additional officers would help them address the growing concerns in our neighborhoods, especially considering the recent serious incidents, including murder charges that have shaken our communities," said Conway Ottenheimer.

Furthermore, Conway Ottenheimer continues to highlight the urgent need for a dedicated mental health crisis unit in Conception Bay Centre and Conception Bay North to alleviate some of the burdens on law enforcement.

"A mental health crisis unit would not only benefit our communities but would also provide much-needed support for police officers who are currently managing a dual crisis of mental health and addiction without the appropriate resources,” explained Conway Ottenheimer.

Despite the government’s neglect of these pressing issues, Conway Ottenheimer remains committed to advocating for the safety and well-being of constituents in her area. Conway Ottenheimer stressed, "we need a government that listens to the concerns of its police officers and residents. It is time for the government to step up and provide additional funding needed for the police to do their jobs effectively."

“A proactive crime prevention strategy is essential as our towns and communities navigate these challenging times. It is the responsibility of our Government to ensure that our police forces have the support they need to keep our neighborhoods safe,” concluded Ottenheimer.
