Wakeham has written the Auditor General and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
(February 23, 2024, St. John’s): – PC Party Leader Tony Wakeham (MHA, Stephenville – Port au Port) has written the Auditor General and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) requesting both entities to investigate the Furey Liberal travel nursing fiasco immediately.
"After hearing the scathing revelations this week, the Auditor General needs to look at this fiasco from an internal control perspective while the RCMP needs to rule out any fraudulent activity," said Wakeham. "When you pay $1.6 million to an agency for meal allowances that weren't paid out to the nurses, it appears that there may be fraudulent activity that needs to be investigated."
Wakeham said that the sole-sourced contract that originated from a Liberal lobbyist contacting the Premier's office appears to show a free-for-all on the public's dime with no accountability warranting the AG and RCMP to investigate.
"While the Minister of Health says an investigation may be too soon, it deserves immediate attention when taxpayer's dollars are to be accounted for. If I were Premier today, the responsible thing would be to call in the AG and RCMP and ensure no stone is left unturned. We need to get to the bottom of this fiasco. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians deserve accountability, and our nurses deserve better."
A copy of both letters has been attached to this release.
