Wakeham Calls for Expanded Recreational Cod Fishery

St. John’s, NL (July 2, 2025) – Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and MHA for Stephenville–Port au Port, today called on Premier John Hogan to join him in pushing for a seven-day-a-week recreational cod fishery from July 1 to October 1. Wakeham said the expanded season would boost local economies, support tourism, and improve safety on the water.

“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians deserve fair access to a tradition that’s part of who we are,” said Wakeham. “Expanding the fishery gives people the flexibility to fish safely and responsibly, without being forced onto the water only on weekends.”

On the opening day of this year’s food fishery, two individuals were rescued after their boat overturned off Crawley’s Point. Wakeham said the incident is a clear reminder of the risks created by a weekend-only schedule that pressures people onto the water in limited timeframes.

Wakeham also challenged St. John’s East Liberal MP and Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson to listen to the people of the province and deliver the changes they’re asking for.

“The federal government’s promise of consultations this fall is too little, too late,” said Wakeham. Other Atlantic provinces are allowed to fish seven days a week during the recreational fishery. Once again, Newfoundland and Labrador is being left behind.”

Wakeham called on the Liberal government to act now and give people the recreational fishery they deserve.

“It’s time for leadership that puts our people first. A PC government will stand up to Ottawa and fight for what matters most to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”
