St. John's, N.L. (October 22, 2024) – Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and MHA for Stephenville - Port au Port, today reaffirmed his commitment to revitalize rural Newfoundland and Labrador. The commitment comes following the PC Party’s Annual Convention held this past weekend in Gander, which focused on the neglect of rural communities under the current Furey-Liberal government.

"Under the Furey-Liberals, rural communities have been left behind. People are experiencing worsening road conditions, rising living costs, dwindling access to essential services, and increasing wait times for healthcare. This neglect is unacceptable," said Wakeham.

A resolution calling for a region-by-region approach to rejuvenate rural Newfoundland and Labrador passed unanimously at the convention. The resolution emphasized the untapped opportunities of rural economic development and the unrealized potential of various key sectors in the province.

"Local business owners, municipal leaders and community advocates are brimming with innovative ideas to rejuvenate their regions,” added Wakeham. “A future Progressive Conservative government will take a region-by-region approach, including collaborating with local stakeholders to create strong economies and improve services.”

Wakeham stressed that a Progressive Conservative government would ensure that rural Newfoundland and Labrador not only survives but thrives. "We believe in the promise of our rural communities and every hard-working Newfoundlander and Labradorian. Together, we can build a better future for rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Better starts now,” said Wakeham.
