Wakeham: Students Must Have the Supports They Need – For All of Us

(St. John’s, NL) – Progressive Conservative Leader Tony Wakeham today raised concerns that too many children with disabilities and learning challenges are not receiving the support they need in classrooms this year.

Wakeham said he has heard from families in both his district of Stephenville–Port au Port and across the province that students are at risk of falling behind because they are not getting the essential support they require.

Parents are telling me their children no longer have a student assistant in the classroom—support they had just last year, and support their teachers and doctors agree they still need,” said Wakeham. “This is support that could help these students succeed. Instead, children are being left behind because of funding cuts.”

Wakeham called the situation “unacceptable” and vowed that a PC government under his leadership would ensure real inclusive education.

A PC government I lead will be committed to individualized support, small-group instruction, and ensuring student assistants are available for the students who need them,” said Wakeham. “Children and youth are not an expense—they are our future.”
